Hockey Memorabilia and Collectibles

Just like many other sports, hockey has a long and rich history or memrabilia and collectables. With millions of fans wanting to have a piece of their favorite team, favorite player or just a part of history, the memorabilia business has been booming. Hockey cards are one of the most common and affordable collectables around, though autographs and other memorabilia have also been around since the beginning of the game.

Autographs and Hockey Collectibles

As long as there have been hockey players, there have been autographs, momentos, and hockey collectibles. Hockey memorabilia with certified and authenticated autographs are an excellent way to own a piece of your favorite player or hockey team. Compared to hockey cards, they represent a much more tangible investment and usually hold their value much better. Hockey art is another form of memorabilia/collectible that can satisfy the tastes of both hockey fans and investors. In many cases, art buys can be a hedge against inflation when held over very long periods of time. Autographed pictures, hockey sticks, hockey pucks, jerseys, and hockey cards are some of the more common forms of autographed hockey memorabilia. Hockey Cards

Hockey trading cards are one of the oldest forms of hockey collecting related hobbies. It is believed that the first hockey cards were issued in 1910 by cigarette companies in Canada. Hockey cards evolved from cigarettes to packs with cards in the early 1950s. Parkhurst introduced cards in 1951, and a couple of years later in 1953 Topps began issuing cards as a way to sell gum. The gum wasn't always the most popular, but hockey trading cards flourished into a huge hobby and business. The late 1980s saw the entry of Upper Deck into the sports cards market. They brought a brand new focus to hockey cards, focusing on quality - whether it be the pictures, the composition of the card, the glossy look, tamper proof packaging, and no more gum! Since the early 1990s, the hockey trading card scene has become quite diluted, with tens of different brands printing cards and each putting out special sets and "high value" inserts. The original premise of trying to get the cards of your favorite hockey players and trading with your friends seems to have been overtaken by rookie cards, potential values and special inserts. Having said that, hockey cards can be an interesting though volatile investment.
